According to Ars Technica, Google on Wednesday revealed five recent malware samples built using generative AI, all of which were far below professional development standards. The samples—PromptLock, FruitShell, PromptFlux, PromptSteal, and QuietVault—were easy to detect even by less-sophisticated endpoint protections and had no operational impact. One sample, PromptLock, was part of an academic study analyzing AI’s effectiveness in ransomware attacks but omitted persistence, lateral movement, and advanced evasion tactics. Security firm ESET had previously discovered PromptLock and hailed it as “the first AI-powered ransomware,” though researchers noted clear limitations. Independent researcher Kevin Beaumont said threat development using AI remains “painfully slow” more than three years into the generative AI craze, while another anonymous expert noted AI isn’t creating scarier-than-normal malware.
The reality check we needed
Here’s the thing about AI panic: it often runs way ahead of actual capabilities. We’ve been hearing for years about how AI will revolutionize cybercrime, lowering the barrier to entry and creating super-malware that traditional defenses can’t stop. But what Google actually found looks more like amateur hour than professional threat development.
All five samples used previously seen methods, making them easy to counteract. They didn’t require defenders to adopt new defenses. But here’s what often gets buried: these same reports usually include disclaimers about limitations. Google’s analysis found no evidence of successful automation or breakthrough capabilities. OpenAI said much the same. The problem is that these qualifications get lost in the frenzy to portray AI-assisted malware as an imminent threat. When you’re seeking venture funding or trying to sell security services, scary stories move product.
