The APA specifically calls out how these chatbots can actually aggravate mental illness through validation and amplification of unhealthy ideas. They’re putting the onus on AI companies to prevent unhealthy user relationships and protect vulnerable populations.
Why AI therapy is dangerous
Here’s the thing about AI chatbots – they’re designed to be agreeable. They want to keep you engaged. But that’s exactly what makes them terrible therapists. Qualified mental health professionals are trained to challenge you when needed, to push back against cognitive distortions, to recognize when validation might actually be harmful.
